Aqueous, an audio-visual installation by Toni Mijač, a young artist from Split; a closed world of audio-visual delirium which provides the visitor with an intense experience of his/her surroundings. The complexity level of the soundscape is synchronized with the accompanying video in a way that neither element prevails, which emphasises the experience of the exhibition space as generating a state of mind which results in extraordinary emotions. The visual purity and simplicity of the water surface motif is activated by the alternating fall of water drops which create refraction waves. The sound instrument – the piano, is chosen because of the diverse spectre of tones it produces – coordinates and applies a sound to each drop falling on the water surface thus creating a minimalist sound composition rich in tone and rhythm dynamic. The instrument functions as a set of percussions, while the drops act as a drum which produces a sound effect on visual channels of various colours coordinated by their colouristic features with the tones of the instrument. The dynamic rhythm with a fast motion picture tempo and intense sound is interchanged with calming rhythmical episodes, revealing the artistic fascination with performative art forms of the theatrical and performance variety. The most effective experience of emerging oneself into the created ambiance is by standing in the very centre of the exhibition space, in the middle of the overwhelming, enormous sound-aqueous surfaces.
