After incubating some fresh local sound art and dealing with borders, surveillance and consumerism, Mochvara Gallery is jumping head first into hedonistic-gastro waters merged with contemporary sound.
Taste buds will bloom and hearing nerves will sway in the big hall at Pogon Jedinstvo on Saturday, June 1st 2013. Starting at 20.00 h sharp, the performance FOODJOB - Frequencies under the tongue, first presented at the Interference festival in Bisaccia 2010, will transform Mochvara Gallery into a seductive ambiance where we will smell, taste, watch and hear melodic cuisine of the Italian-Croatian provenance. The generating of sound in real time during the cooking process is accomplished by panoramic recordings and piezo microphones which transmit the resonances created during cooking. After the performance delicacy by Enrico Ascoli, with the professional culinary assistance of Mario Boboanović, we will feast on the gastronomical byproducts through the tasting of the edible creations concocted right in front of your eyes and ears.

KONTEJNER | bureau of contemporary art praxis is inviting artists and authors to submit
their projects and ideas to Extravagant age open call in order to participate in the festival program of the third international Extravagant bodies festival. The open call deadline is 3rd June 2013.
Extravagant bodies is an international trans-disciplinary art festival initiated in 2007 as a
triennial project that deals with societal demarcations of normal and pathological physicality, appearance, behaviour, sexuality and/or life style. The topic of the third edition subtitled Extravagant age is developed around individual experiences and social implications of old age.
The festival Extravagant bodies: Extravagant age recognizes the questions of the third age as the ones that make visible the premises at the very basis of our contemporary society, opening at the same time possibilities for a specific critical approach. To a hyper-productive, multitasking society obsessed with competition and profit, old age opposes slowness, minimal production and consumption, the opportunity for analysis and reflection. To the young, energetic and constantly embellished and rejuvenated body, age opposes its own body that is becoming increasingly distanced from the ideals of health and beauty and that yet can still be a source of pleasure and satisfaction. The festival presents artworks, films, performances, conference lectures and texts that critically engage with the issues of old age – from economy, health, memory, dementia, leisure, beauty, solitude, boredom, love, sexuality and death, to scientific innovations in life prolongation, prosthetic devices, regenerative medicine and questions of immortality.

A new season in Mochvara Gallery kicks off with the Sound Art Incubator project – a production polygon for young and up-and-coming artists and authors working with sound. This years first incubation period is takes shape in three phases, a production workshop, performances and an exhibition, all taking place at Pogon Jedinstvo and with the goal of directly stimulating the development of the local experimental sound art scene. A versatile gang of authors from Zagreb, Rijeka, Osijek, Dubrovnik and Čakovec will execute and demonstrate their sound art projects: from interactive field recording interfaces, through biohacking and cooking inspired DYI instruments , all coming together in a collective sound performance at the Incubator opening. We bet you had no idea you can grow your own fully functional microphone/speaker with the help of microbes. Or that you could play a gramophone record with a fork and spoon. And you probably never paid attention to the everyday humming of your refrigerator...That's more than enough reason to check out yet another wonder packed sound art evening at Mochvara Gallery.

Ivana Smiljanić, a young Serbian artist, is preparing an energetic evening in collaboration with the prettier sex – DANCE DANCE DANCE is a performance defined by the musical play-list chosen by Zagreb women who experienced some form of partnership violence. The ladies spoke their minds and created a personal musical play-list which is the integral part of the performance – all the while the artist dances insistently the performance is taped and reproduced in the gallery space titled with the information of each particular song being played, the name of the author, song and whose choice the song is.

Swiss sound artists Strotter Inst., Strøm (Gaudenz Badrutt i Christian Müller) and Flo Kaufmann – FloKa are presenting three different performances in Mochvara Gallery. The common denominator of their performances is sound with an expressive avant-garde feeling – sound inspired by ironic dadaist jesting with musical conventions; a brutal sound which transforms noise into a meditative soundscape; sound for which the difference between instrument and installation becomes "Inst.", insignificant; sound as a soundtrack for a SF movie you never watched: a cocktail of sounds shaken from 2/3 of avant-garde classics and 1/3 of experimental rock laced with a pinch of purple pop-roar. Four artists in three performances manipulate with sound on an optical and auditive level, and the sound experience is even more magnified with a visually over saturated space – Strotter's object/instrument devices and self-playing mix desks; Strøm's doepfer oscillators, modular systems and stompbox circuits; FloKa's absurd and bizarre Staubsauger, Typosynth and Sequenz16 instruments. It's three half an hour portions of pure avant-garde electronic sex appeal for the first early autumn sense awakening at Mochvara Gallery.

Imagine if someone proposed you with a (seemingly simple and logical) demand for intelligent social behaviour and activity. And then, this same "someone" asked you to channel this activity exclusively towards a positive social (re)action, all the while trying to convince you that this kind of behaviour is impossible without agreement, as the basis of human intellect. No worries, we're not trying to sell you with some dated political activism - we're talking about the principles behind the week long hang out of the progressive crew from the international initiative Cirkulacija 2, joining with local artists in the Zagreb edition of Total art platform.
The influx of creative minds ill take part in the well known Mochvara Gallery manner, as it's already been a year and a half since we've been busting out sound art and complementary noise art practises. The activities during the Platform will encompass performances, workshops and public presentations of concert, performance or exhibition modes and all kinds of other creative-experimental laboratory trinkets. After numerous Arduino robot workshops, performances and improvisational noise sessions, the best is saved for last: at the grand finale on June 13th you will be shaken to the core by Dejan Knez - one of the founders of the super-cult Laibach- with his 300.000 V.K. fraction/division of the band. The announcement of this new club-kunst event is especially dear to us. How would it not be when we are welcoming the eccentric French artist/musician Laetita Sonami to our Gallery. The performance mysteriously named "A historical moment on a line between A and B" will be performed by Laetitia on her own unique, elaborated and high-tech instrument called "Lady's Glove".
What's it exactly about? The basis of the performance are the gestures made by Sonami - the gestures, thanks to the "Lady's Glove" instrument consisting of over 20 sensors, control various electronic audio mechanisms, i.e. by the change of distance between the hand and the body or ground. The result of each subtle movement is a change in sound. The body, movement, hand in glove and the sound that is embodied; there are no other spatial references... The juicy details will remain unrevealed - on May 28th you will be able to see for yourself what this brilliant Frenchwoman in her bionic gloves has prepared for her first Zagreb exhibition.

Month of May - Mochvara Gallery is shifting into fifth gear. The first treat on the program menu: the interactive installation "Fiction and loss". Master of the ceremony: Mirjana Batinić, our home girl with a Ljubljana address. Yes, this is our first May club kunst experience in the Gallery and, no, we won't be treating you to a complementary bowl of beans (but rather with another club kunst extravaganza at the end of the month). But first we want to dismember you into your most personal fears - especially if you're afraid of the unknown, and better yet the unknown in the dark. Freaky?
The bravest ones, who won't be waiting for their guinea pig friends to drop in first and recreate their experiences, will be expected at the exhibition opening on May 15th at 8pm. And you can also find out everything about the strange images and noises in the dark, as well as the technical challenges of such an installation, by participating in the user-friendly talk with Mirjana (the artist), Zoran (the tech mastermind) and Ida (author of original text accompanying the work) at the Club Mochvara from 7pm onwards.

The term device_art refers to art production based on various aspects of technological devices and mechanisms: the creative usage of analogue/digital, high/low technologies, also including devices, gadgets, machines, robots and tech oriented performances. The aim of the triennial international exhibition Device_art is to present the creative tendencies at the junction of art and design, gadget-hack. There is no fixed subject or theme the proposed works should refer to, nor is it necessary for the works to have an exclusively artistic aspect.
Device_art is a comparative research project which, alongside local production, presents a particular international device art scene. This year, the works selected through the open call and presenting the current artistic production in Croatia, will be included in the international exhibition taking place in Zagreb and Prague. This edition of Device_art is organized in collaboration with the Czech International Centre for Art and New Technologies, CIANT, and Kapelica Gallery from Ljubljana.

The performances by Slovenian artists Miha Ciglar and Luka Dekleva & Luka Prinčič are going to transform the club space into a space for experimental audio sessions. The artists will present to the audience a unique insight into the intriguing world of sound art.
The unpredictable dynamic and use of abstract glitch aesthetics of Schizogram, along with Ultrasound Haptics' research into the haptic interface based on ultrasound waves, are going to create an atmosphere that merges the concepts of temporary and permanent, accidental and mechanical, and human and technological. In the focus of the 2011 programme of Gallery Mochvara the emphasis will be put on sound art, promoting the progressive urban art scene focused on the creative use of technology, acoustics and noise, using new media practices to bring together the auditory, the visual and the tactile.
The 2011 programme has been conceived by the curatorial team of KONTEJNER | bureau of contemporary art praxis.

The film talks about the first radio station in the world edited and run by psychiatric patients in Buenos Aires. This is an intimate story of a strugle for equality, authenticity and the right of the marginalized groups to be equaly heard in society. Maywa Denki live concerts are performed with original musical instruments. Every time a machine problem occurs, Maywa's laborers perform an emergency repair. In this way they keep the instruments in operation until the end of each show, and gain feedback for the future development of their products. It's very much like a Formula One Grand Prix in which accidents and crashes are common.
In their concerts, you'll not only see musical instruments but you'll also meet the robots Punch-kun, Renda-chan and Seamoons; sub-characters such as Sava-O and Poodles: and fun people like the accountant Wono-san, Laborers and Yankees (Japanese teen gangs) Maywa Denki.

Read moreKontejner is proud to announce participation at the PSI#15 Conference in Zagreb, June 24th at 18.00 as a part of the opening, and on June 25th at 21.30 in Student Centre with a show titled "The Orange Dog and Other Tales (Even Better Than the Real Thing)".
Tickets will be available in the lobby of Zagreb Youth Theatre's from June 19th. Price of the ticket is 20 kn.

The festival ran through like a storm! Everyone was too excited for words! However, excitements must come to an end, and so, our adventure with world artists, their works and you, dear audience. We had, among other things, cakes with parsley, ejaculations, little cinema projections and enjoyment in canabis. On our website, you can see photos from all events and read the texts from the symposium.
