“…for the voices of the past we have respect, to the present moment of creation we are fully committed. and for the future? we are very very čúrïouš.” With these words, the manifesto of the seven-member collective Çhâñt Élečtrónïqùe concludes, as they return to Zagreb after three years. These words perhaps best capture the essence of the music the group creates. Drawing on traditional music as a foundation, they add electronic elements to open up new dimensions. Çhâñt Élečtrónïqùe bring the modern into the ancient.
At a time when traditional music is often exploited for superficial tourist purposes, and when many argue that tradition should neither be altered nor modernised, Çhâñt Élečtrónïqùe’s approach restores the discussion to its essential foundations. Tradition is a living entity; it has always been subject to change. In the context of the present moment, the music created by Çhâñt Élečtrónïqùe strikes a compelling balance between tradition and contemporaneity.
The members of Çhâñt Élečtrónïqùe met at various traditional music workshops and come from France, Portugal, Ireland, Croatia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina. The group includes the well-known Dunja Bahtijarević and Nenad Kovačić, alongside Teresa Campos (Portugal), Louise Calzada, Nils Peschanski and Raphael Hardy (France), and Darragh Quinn (Ireland).
“It’s like listening to traditional choral music on the dark side of the moon…” - Songlines “…an enthralling debut album that explores international folk traditions and avant-garde beats”
- The Quietus
“…Çhâñt Élečtrónïqùe experiments with distinctive archaic ethno chants of local communities, infused with electronics and creatively produced interventions that sound fantastic… Çhâñt Élečtrónïqùe undoubtedly deserves great attention and, judging by all indications, will receive it on the global music scene thanks to its creative boldness and successful experimentation.”

Before the collective Çhâñt Élečtrónïqùe, the female collective Vakat will perform the piece “Before Breakfast.” Vakat reinterprets the traditional singing style of ganga through a contemporary, engaged expression, shaping a new language of resistance.
“Ganga is a form of folk two-part singing from rural regions. Women composed and sang ganga, giving voice to their worries and pain, as well as their joys and hopes. We inherit ganga from our female ancestors and create a safe space in which we sing about the issues women continue to face today, making their experiences visible as they merge with the experiences of us all. While respecting the vocal technique and the ten-syllable verse, we perform to an electronic soundscape, re-reading old songs in a new key and writing original lyrics.”
“Before Breakfast,” the first of six performances in a new cycle that is taking place around the family table, exploring themes such as inherited identity, internalised patterns, transgenerational trauma, the environment that shapes us, and our resistance, through archetypal elements.
