Ute Wassermann (DE): voiceLab workshop and concert evening

Vocal workshop and concert evening

On 12 January 2026, a concert evening with Ute Wassermann took place at Močvara Club, featuring her solo performance "chimera" alongside a collective performance by participants of the voiceLab vocal workshop.

The voiceLab workshop was held in Zagreb from 9 to 11 January 2026. As part of the programme, Wassermann introduced Croatian vocalists and artists to experimental vocal techniques. Following three days of intensive work, the voiceLab participants formed a temporary choir and, during the concert evening, presented their voices as versatile, surprising, and extreme sonic instruments – ranging from sighs and whispers to resonant polyphonies, screams, and yodelling.

The workshop participants were: Magdalena Bilić, Filip Borelli, Silvija Dogan, Nikolina Kovačević, Melita Lovričević, Alena Orović, Demirel Pašalić, Dina Puhovski, Dinka Radonić, Maja Rivić, Silvija Stipanov, and Ana-Marija Zubčić.

The workshop is part of the project New Perspectives for Action by network Re-Imagine Europe, co-funded by the European Union.

Ute Wassermann (DE)

Ute Wassermann has studied visual arts (sound and performance art) at the Academy of Fine Arts in Hamburg. She tours the world as an improviser, she realises audio-visual voice performances and compositions for soloists and ensembles. As an interpreter of contemporary music, she has premiered numerous compositions written for her voice. At the core of her research is an ongoing and uncompromised exploration of her voice as an extreme and multidimensional sound instrument. Her methods to extend and alienate the voice include the use of bird whistles, lo-fi electronics, resonators, field recordings, projections and different types of microphones. Over the years she has developed an ever-growing catalogue of multifaceted vocal expressions which has inspired improvisors and composers all over the world. Her workshops which are often described by the participants as a liberating experience involve improvisation or composition from solo to choir.
