Handbike movie, Martin Bruch’s debut film, is a conceptual study about the passage of time and movement. Since 1992, when he was diagnosed as being afflicted with multiple sclerosis, Martin Bruch has been moving along with the help of mechanical appliances. During 2002 he went on a journey across the world on a self-made handbike, and filmed his rides through big cities and in the countryside employing a camera attached to his helmet. The resulting sound and visual images were edited into an intimate travel diary, with his rides through the thick traffic of big cities of different continents. In 65 scenes, the films shows fragments of life as seen at 10 km/h and an insight into the loneliness of an unusual rider, caught in the chaotic life of the street. The fear of the exhiting, quick downhill ride or cutting turns reveal the author’s sense of humor and the joy of experimentation. Experimental film on the impossible freedom.
